The only thing harder to find than Smart Bomb in the Swarm was this Sampler CD. I'm very happy I was able to finish my Neck collection (based on what's on Discogs, anyway) and finally retire from the hunt. Now all I need are the Spooge tapes and one more Burnt By The Sun/Car Bomb split. Interesting detail, "Fuck It" from Should My Fist Eye is called "Forget" on here.

The day has finally come. And quite a bit sooner than I had imagined. I really didn't think I would own a copy of this CD for anything less than the price of my soul. Someone had a copy for sale on Discogs for $2,500 at one point, and that was money I wasn't prepared to drop on a CD I already had MP3s of. Now I own the goldmine. Not only do I have a copy, I have a box full of these things thanks to Mike sending them my way. As far as Neck's physical releases go I'm only missing the Sampler CD but that's not a huge deal. Having all of the main albums is, and having this album is a dream come true considering its past rarity. If you want a copy, check Discogs. I'm selling them there and $1 from each CD sold goes to The Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy. 

But It Won't Stop and This Is What It's Like are the best tracks on the album, by the way. 

Burnt By The Sun / Car Bomb Split

These were some of my first Car Bomb Discogs purchases back in 2017. I remember thinking it was odd that there were any for sale at all, and that they were so cheap. I mean this is classic Car Bomb vinyl, why wouldn't someone want these? I think I found the answer. The BBTS side does not sound good. I assumed it was due to excess wear at first, but once I got the second copy it became clear that it was more likely a manufacturing problem since they both had the same issue. The Car Bomb side sounds fine so for my purposes it's OK. Not that these get any play, anyway when I already have Centralia on vinyl. Especially not the clear one which was limited to 100 copies. That's the one I'm hoping to cash in when I retire. 

Car Bomb - Centralia (Relapse Promo CD)

This is literally just a version of Centralia that was sent out for promotional use. There isn't much to say if you're already familiar with the album. And if you aren't, get on that. The main difference here is the case, or in this case the sleeve. It's just a cardboard sleeve, unlike the retail copy of Centralia which came in a jewel case. I'm not sure if I'll ever rip this, that warning seems pretty serious about damaging my audio/computer equipment. Anyone know if it's for real?

If you've ever wanted to own spooge tracks in a physical format, this CD is your best bet. Just make sure no one finds out that you bought it. And if they do, dispose of them quickly. 

This is probably the best intro to spooge you could give someone. The tracks are less jazz metal and more jazz fusion. Less abrasive and easier to listen to on the whole for someone that isn't used to that style of music. That's not to say it's easy listening, and some people will probably be turned off by the lyrics. But it makes sense that this is the easiest of their releases to find, even before around 100 copies of the CD made their way onto BandCamp. Watch out, the pee pee song might become the next TikTok meme. 

By the way, if you download any of the spooge music from BandCamp, not only will you get images with covers and lyrics like the ones I used above (I used my own scans though), you will also get extra images, pdfs with show flyers, etc. So get to it. Also of note is Larry from Neck recorded part of the pee pee song.

Car Bomb (Demo 2004)

This is where it all started. Car Bomb's first official release. After solidifying their lineup, they recorded demos of 3 of the tracks that would eventually make their way to Centralia. From what I can tell, they handed a ton of copies out for free, in addition to selling them online. They also sold mp3s. There are differences in these tracks vs. the album tracks that you can hear in the YouTube link below. I've also included the mp3 review from Jen's Metal Page and a relevant snippet of the bio from their site circa late 2004.

Despite the fact that both bands had broken out of the traditional molds of metal and hardcore, the need to play heavier and more complex music drove Jon to seek out other musicians. In 2002, he recruited Greg to play in a project that would develop into Car Bomb. Jam sessions commenced and would continue for eighteen months with various lineup changes. Mike and Elliot were eventually added to the group and rounded out the final line up. In early 2004, Car Bomb’s first recording began in the house that Greg and Jon currently occupy. With this recording completed, Car Bomb is focused on getting their music out to as many people as possible.

Their site is pretty cool- There is a little music player up at the top, and you click on it and it will play the songs and just keep looping. It locked up my computer switching to the next song, but it was worth it. Anyway, these guys remind me of heavier System of a Down. The singer mostly reminds me of them. The music is heavy as shit. They describe themselves as a death metal band from NY, sounding like Dillinger and Meshuggah. They kick ass. Musically they are all over the place, they have the NY death mosh beats, and the singer is screaming like crazy. Once the drummer breaks into the double bass, it's pure intensity. Check them out, one of the better bands I have heard all year.
